I found this over at The Transformation of Kern, and although it's an American thing, it completely applies everywhere.
Go here to find out more about it.
My parents own a small business, so I know how super important it is to support small businesses. Sure, I can be caught time to time going to those big box stores, after all, I'm only human, BUT, the more you shop at small businesses, the more products those small businesses can offer you and the more small businesses your town can support. When you shop at local small businesses, that money stays in your community instead of going to a large corporation. Not to mention, the quality of service you get from small businesses is about 1000% better than at those big box stores (you know, when you have to hunt someone down to help you find something who then makes you feel bad for wanting them to go out of their way to find the product you want to purchase?). So shop small and shop local, guys. Everyone benefits!

I live in the Beaches which is VERY small business oriented. While I sometimes go to the bigger grocery stores to get supplies my local Valumart doesn't have, I'm acutely aware of how much support local business need and I try to give as much as I can to them. I wrote about this awhile ago myself but completely forgot to post it. Might revisit the idea again now that you've jogged my memory. :)
I love small business shops. People are always so nice! I have always wanted to have my own shop. A few weeks ago, I spent only like $30 on a pair of motocross goggles at a small town store. They guy was supper nice and helped me out and we talked bikes for a while.
Even the bike store I got my bmx from, had to spacial order my bike pads for me and this other one near my mom's had to order my helmet for me. They loved it and I go back to them when I can't find something because I know they can help me out. And in turn I am help them too!
Great post...
I see too many vacant retail spaces which used to be run by small independent retailers...sigh indeed!
Given the option I will shop locally 10 times out of 10. The main benefit (and there are many) is the quality of products... it's ridiculous what 'big box' stores charge for things that fall apart in no time at all. Plus, the staff at these stores actually CARE about their job and are wayyyyy more helpful than anyone I've encountered shopping at a franchise.
Great post!
I love this idea! I always try to shop locally when I can, and this ideology makes me want to do it more.
Thanks for sharing!
